What it is
The Aria Pro II PE series is one of the most respected original electric guitar designs to emerge from Japan’s guitar boom of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Built by the well-regarded Matsumoku factory, these guitars were designed to compete with high-end American instruments while offering their own distinct identity.
The PE models follow a familiar single-cutaway format but incorporate several thoughtful design choices, including carved tops, set-neck construction, and high-quality electronics. Rather than simply copying a Gibson Les Paul, the PE series represents a modern interpretation of the single-cut concept.
Why it’s a sleeper
While some high-end PE models have become collectible, many examples remain surprisingly affordable relative to their build quality.
Part of the reason is that the guitars do not fit neatly into the Les Paul copy market. As a result, they often receive less attention despite excellent craftsmanship.
For players willing to look beyond the most famous brands, the PE series can offer remarkable value.
What it’s like to live with
PE guitars tend to feel solid and well balanced, with strong sustain and articulate humbucker tones. Neck profiles are generally comfortable and slightly modern compared with many vintage Gibson-style guitars.
These instruments often respond well across a wide range of styles, from clean tones to heavier overdriven sounds.
